about

If you are a fan of Bolt Thrower and Malevolent Creation, make sure to get this album.

The latest album by London Death Metal maniacs Decrepid opens with a hauntingly melancholic introductory riff that would not feel out of place on a more Death Doom album. It is a beautiful, somewhat melodic introduction that is imbued with misery, anguish and torment that gradually leads into the full-on assault of Fields of Flesh, whereupon the energy and fury escalates and you find yourself being ground beneath a beast of a song.

With but a brief respite after the bludgeoning, you find yourself being pummelled by Phobos Descent. Around the 01:30 mark, you find yourself being crushed by Earth-shatteringly heavy riffs as the Apocalypse described in the lyrics is made musically manifest with a suffocating slower segment before the tempo increases once again. As the song ends with solos shrieking like the souls of the damned on the doomed planet, you will find yourself listening with a rictus grin.

This is killer Death Metal that will pummel and savage you. The mix is near perfect, with the drums being prominent without overpowering the other instruments, though at points the bass is somewhat harder to perfectly distinguish. Everything flows perfectly in the album, with songs leading effortlessly into one another, as mentioned earlier regarding how Fields of Flesh flows into Phobos Descent more or less seamlessly, with but a brief respite.

As the album inexorably marches on, you will find yourself raging to the bloodthirsty assault of Per Malfeicium before the 15-minute epic of Endless Sea of Graves begins. The epic begins with an ominous bass riff that is soon joined by the guitars, helping to summon forth mental vistas of a vast expanse of corpses before the floodgates open and you are assaulted by remorseless riffs and drums, accentuated by the tormented, bloodcurdling cries of vocalist Cris. This song is fantastically well-written, with the solos around 5:45 mark adding to the macabre, doomier riffs and enhancing the sense of trepidation and despair inherent to this Eschatological soundtrack.

The song fulfils its goals of summoning forth visions of mass death and global genocide and is a perfect ending to this album."

"I have had a massive hankering for some good old school death metal lately and Decrepid have heeded my call with this new album. With equal parts Incantation and 90’s influence and a spice all their own, Decrepid have put out one of the best death metal records I’ve had the pleasure of listening to this year. It’s grimy, cavernous, and dark, making for a potent old school blend that doesn’t feel forced or contrived. Also the album art is spectacular, which is always an added bonus.

Let’s start getting into the specifics here. The guitar tone is what immediately stood out to me upon first listen. I love a good filthy sounding guitar and this record has it all over. But when the solos are played, the sound is cleaned up in a really effective way. It makes you focus in on and appreciated how technically skilled this bands guitarists are. The solos are placed at exactly the right times so as to make them hit hard in a way that was obviously intentional. It goes to show what skilled songwriters these guys are and how well thought out the writing on this record was.

Don’t get me wrong, I love blast beats as much as the next guy but I also love music that doesn’t feel cramped and that’s exactly what Decrepid have achieved with this record. Due to the drummer’s excellent work, the music is able to be fast and pummeling when it needs to be but also dialed back in a way that opens the sonic field up. I think it’s this utilization of sonic space that makes this album so easy to listen to. This skill is also shown in the opening section of the album and in the last track with slowed down melodic sections before things pick back up again. The variation in tempo and aggression make this an album that I can listen to repeatedly without feeling worn out, which I like. It adds another layer of depth and dimension to the music in a way that’s very well executed.

The vocals are a really exciting aspect of the album to me. They are varied in tone and pitch to keep things interesting but the way they were mixed is what I really liked. While listening, you get the sense that the vocals are far off in the distance somewhere, they’ve got a cavernous quality to them like I mentioned earlier. It’s a personal preference thing but I’m a massive fan of that vocal effect in death metal. This also adds to the feeling of openness that the album has and aids in everything flowing well and feeling uncramped. The rhythm section is nearly perfect too. There’s a strong underlying groove through the record that makes in a lot of fun to listen too. The only criticism I have is that I would have liked the bass tone to be a little more punchy and pronounced. With the exception of that though, I don’t have anything bad to say about this record, Decrepid hit the ball out of the park with this one. This record is an absolute must for any metal fan this year

"I find that pressing play on yet another death metal album can evoke sensations of, on the one hand, untamed excitement as to quite how ‘deathy’ this one is going to be and, on the other hand, and a concern that I will be left with that unwelcome feeling that I have heard it all before.

Hailing from this little island of ours, Decrepid have produced an album that plays very much into the hands of my first sensation. ‘Endless Sea of Graves’ is born from the blood pits of the 90s US death metal scene yet manages to pull on a new pair of combat shorts and a long sleeve Obituary top and walk out looking positively respectable.

Opener ‘Fields of Flesh’ and the stomping ‘Plagues of Mortality’ leave very little to the imagination given that their brand of death metal sounds so alive and complete. Whilst the inevitable comparisons will be made to Immolation, Deicide and even Autopsy, the one thing that leaps out to me is the guitar soloing. Where other bands have drawn on the chaotic messiness that suits the genre, Decrepid have used them wisely and injected a tangible beauty amongst the filth.

‘Endless Sea of Graves’ demonstrates something that we have never done brilliantly well at in the UK. And that is to produce simply excellent, no-holds-barred death metal. Many have tried and many have erred, but not here. This is exactly the album you should put on when Gobby Gary from down the garage asks you what sort of music you like to listen to. Death metal, mate. - 8/10"

"British old school Death Metal mob DECREPID are back with their third album of carnage. Set for release via Xtreem Music on July 7th.

Booming ambience sets us in before bleak guitars draw in a melancholic and doomy atmosphere. Crashing cymbals fills in the space as we see a foreboding mood build slowly into crushing territories. The drums pick up with grooving bass and visceral riffs convulsing to life before blasting onwards. Spewed vocals complete the ferocious mix with a violent display of growls emanating over the storming instrumental fury. Bringing to mind bands such as Incantation, Asphyx and Immolation, this is some vitriolic Death Metal carnage that does not lack atmosphere or progressive ideas, while still feeling old school. Packing a meaty punch with expansive riffing and devastating drum work, perfectly suited vocals and a tight mix.

Continuing, the record delivers a hellish and mighty blow of masterful Death Metal excellence, conjuring dissonance into the mix to add a really otherworldly feel to the otherwise primal aggression. Alongside the magnificent rhythmic battery we get some brilliant soloing which soars through the cavernous assault, often disappearing as abruptly as it joins, allowing the dripping offal of riffs to continue in their punishing vein. Though totally maniacal, there is some rather melodic touches on this record which draw inspiration from the more doomy side of Death Metal while staying in keep with the brutal onslaught of more straight-forward material too. There is certainly a unique and monolithic sound to this record.

The musicianship showcased on this album is near-flawless with incredibly tight performances from the whole band, allowing a focal disdain to be permeated from the putrid Death Metal they have to offer. With a huge range of tempos, sounds and textures concocted and utilised to their fullest extent while never feeling out of place, it would be impossible not to find something to love about this album for any Death Metal fan. In fact I think most lovers of extremity will adore the whole record. Blistering, savage and superbly written, Decrepid have delivered a master-crafted Death Metal that retains the most important ingredient, a rotted and raw feeling of total death. Ranging from total blasting mayhem to convulsing grooves and headbanging stomps, there is so much to dig on this album which transitions seamlessly through these individual sections and songs too.

A fierce and atmospheric release with endless ideas explored in a fantastically gruesome manner. Nothing on this album outstays its welcome, always pushing forward into new realms of morbidity to deliver a concise yet varied opus of rancidness that will certain wake cadavers with the wonderfully gross yet musically proficient Death Metal massacre. -8.5/10"

"DECREPID return 5 years after their 2nd album "Osseous Empire" (Xtreem Music, 2015) with a new opus titled "Endless Sea of Graves" that continues their already traditional style of old school Death Metal with raw sound where brutality and morbid mid tempos are combined in a natural way during the 6 album tracks (39 min.), whose cover art is an excellent work of art by the defunct Polish artist Zdzislaw Beksinski."

"On July 7th Decrepid’s third full-length “Endless Sea Of Graves” will be released, marking their last album with guitarist Steve Brennan after more than 10 years in the band.

On this album, the UK death metal band offers us unceasing, heavy pounding riffs in a classic approach to their genre, perhaps similar to Benediction or other English bands, with just the right production quality, not too bad but definitely not a super production. This sound fits perfectly with the music.

On this album we find more elaborate and variated composition, in contrast with their previous and much more monotonous “Osseous Empire”. While the songs are also classic death metal, you can hear more tempo changes and interesting melodies, but without falling into a virtuosity that doesn’t fit well in the genre. The guitars have overall the right amount of technique to deliver heavy and original music to the listeners.

What’s most interesting is the title track, a 14-minute-long song that ends the album perfectly, giving an unexpected sound in contrast to the other more conventional songs, where despite the length there isn’t any bit of rest with all the mesmerizing melodies and the greatly placed bass intro.

This is definitely the band’s best full-length up to date, and hopefully their next albums will continue in this one’s style and a change of guitarist won’t worsen the result."

"Rumbling and grumbling their way through 6 tracks of seething and loathing anger distilled through Decrepid’s methods. Ones that involve riffs that flay, solos that scrap, hooks that dig in deep, drums that shatter and vocals that scratch and claw. Each moment an assault on the mind, body and soul."
